Clinical Psychology

What is this?

  • Our Clinical Psychology interventions are aimed at supporting people with moderate to severe distress, often when their difficulties are complex and when CBT or counselling are unlikely to be helpful.
  • These interventions can help you to firstly understand and make sense of your symptoms and distress.
  • These interventions also aim to help you manage your symtoms and distress.
  • A range of psychological interventions may be used.
  • Your sessions may be weekly, fortnightly or monthly and you will have an opportunity to agree the number of sessions in your treatment plan.  You will usually receive 10-20 sessions.
  • This intervention is delivered in person at your GP surgery or other local venues close to you, with sessions lasting up to 50 minutes.

Who supports me?

  • A Clinical Psychologist will deliver the intervention and can support you to enable you to make positive changes.

What are the benefits?

  • Clinical Psychologists are trained to support you to make sense of your difficulties and to explore ways that you may resolve issues and change your behaviour as well as supporting you to find your own solutions to your problems.
  • You will have an opportunity to make sense of experiences that are confusing or distressing and link them to current difficulties.
  • This will help you to make positive and practical changes in your life that will allow you to better manage your issues now and in the future.

How do I access it?

  • You will first need an assessment with one of our therapists. You will have an opportunity to talk about your difficulties and what your goals are.  During your assessment you will be able to discuss treatment options with your therapist, where you may both decide that a brief supportive intervention is best suited to your needs. You will then be given an appointment as soon as one becomes available.
  • You can refer yourself by phoning 0191 282 6600 or by completing the online referral form.
